Bicycle Thieves Target Queens Neighborhoods in Robbery Pattern

By Evelyn Reed, Crime & Public Safety Reporter | March 4, 2026 | Public Safety & Crime

NEW YORK — Queens residents are experiencing heightened anxiety this week as a sophisticated crew of bicycle-mounted thieves targets pedestrians in a series of daylight robberies, according to the New York City Police Department. The suspects have struck five times in recent days, using high-speed maneuvers on two-wheelers to surprise unsuspecting victims.

Robbery Crew Strikes Pedestrians in Five Daylight Incidents

Detectives from the 112th Precinct released surveillance photos of two individuals wanted in connection with the ongoing robbery pattern. According to a community alert by FOX 5 New York, the suspects approach victims from behind on bicycles, snatching purses, mobile phones, and jewelry before fleeing down narrow pedestrian pathways.

The most recent incident occurred near the corner of 63rd Drive and Austin Street, where a 45-year-old woman was dragged several feet after attempting to hold onto her shoulder bag. She was treated at the scene for minor abrasions but did not require hospitalization.

Precinct Deploys Plainclothes Officers to Shopping Districts

"The suspects are leveraging the speed and agility of bicycles to navigate busy sidewalks and escape through areas where patrol cars cannot easily follow," said NYPD Deputy Inspector Jerry O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan added that plainclothes officers have been deployed to high-traffic commercial corridors to monitor for suspicious individuals riding on sidewalks.

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant and avoid using mobile devices while walking in public. Local merchant associations have also started sharing security camera feeds to help identify the suspects' escape routes.

Neighborhood Watch Groups Form Bike Patrols

In response to the spree, local community groups have organized volunteer bicycle patrols to monitor residential side streets during the afternoon hours. The volunteers aim to provide a visible deterrent and report suspicious behavior directly to precinct dispatchers.

This pattern of localized crime has renewed discussions about overall security measures in Queens. Residents continue to seek out local news sites queens to stay informed about ongoing police investigations and neighborhood safety alerts.

Police Ask Public for Assistance in Identifying Suspects

Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the suspects to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline. A reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment.

Flyers featuring security camera grabs of the suspects have been posted throughout the affected neighborhoods. Police believe the suspects may be residing in the local area due to their familiarity with neighborhood alleyways.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas have been most affected by the bicycle robbery pattern?

The robberies have primarily occurred in the commercial districts of Forest Hills, Rego Park, and Corona. Suspects typically target victims near subway entrances and major shopping plazas during the late afternoon hours when foot traffic is heaviest.

How can pedestrians protect themselves from snatch-and-run robberies?

Pedestrians should remain aware of their surroundings, keep valuables secure inside zipped pockets, and avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics. Walking in well-lit areas and staying off your phone while transit-walking also greatly reduces the risk of becoming a target.
