NEW YORK — The New York City Police Department's 106th Precinct has significantly escalated its presence along Cross Bay Boulevard, initiating new patrol strategies this week.

These enhanced measures, including increased marked and unmarked police vehicles and the deployment of mobile surveillance cameras, aim to curb illegal activities and improve public safety in the bustling Queens corridor.

Increased Presence Targets Crime Hotspots

Captain John Rossi, commanding officer of the 106th Precinct, confirmed the heightened enforcement during a press briefing held Tuesday at the precinct's 103-04 101st Avenue station.

"We are responding directly to community concerns regarding quality-of-life issues and traffic violations that have become more prevalent," Captain Rossi stated, emphasizing a data-driven approach to resource allocation.

The initiative follows a 15% increase in reported traffic incidents and a 7% rise in petty larceny cases along the boulevard since late 2025, according to NYPD internal statistics.

This robust police presence extends from the Howard Beach northern end of Cross Bay Boulevard down to the Broad Channel Bridge.

Mobile Surveillance Augments Ground Patrols

Beyond traditional patrols, the NYPD is strategically deploying several high-tech mobile camera units at various points along the boulevard.

These cameras, equipped with license plate recognition and advanced video analytics, serve as crucial deterrents and investigative tools.

"The goal is not just to react to crime, but to prevent it by making our presence unmistakable and our surveillance capabilities extensive," explained Deputy Chief Elena Rodriguez, head of Queens South Patrol Borough, to reporters on Wednesday morning.

The cameras will operate 24/7, providing continuous monitoring and feeding real-time data back to the precinct's command center.

Community Welcomes Proactive Steps

Local residents and business owners have largely expressed relief and support for the NYPD's intensified efforts.

Maria Gomez, proprietor of Maria's Bakery on Cross Bay Boulevard for over two decades, highlighted the positive impact on neighborhood morale.

"We've seen an uptick in reckless driving and some unwelcome crowds," Gomez told Cross Bay News. "Having more officers and those cameras makes everyone feel safer, especially during evening hours."

Community Board 10 District Manager, Matt Lombardi, acknowledged the proactive stance taken by the police department.

"This is a direct result of ongoing dialogues between the community and the 106th Precinct," Lombardi noted, underscoring the importance of collaborative problem-solving.

Traffic Enforcement and Quality-of-Life Focus

The new operational plan specifically targets illegal parking, excessive speeding, and disruptive behavior often associated with late-night gatherings.

Officers are under directives to issue citations for violations that previously might have received warnings, aiming for immediate behavioral correction.

"Our focus is clear: to restore order and ensure that Cross Bay Boulevard remains a safe and enjoyable place for all," Captain Rossi affirmed.

This comprehensive approach is expected to significantly reduce nuisance complaints originating from the commercial strips and adjacent residential areas.

Looking Ahead: Sustained Enforcement

The NYPD plans for these enhanced patrols and surveillance measures to be a sustained effort throughout 2026, not merely a temporary surge.

Funding for the additional mobile camera units was secured through a city council allocation approved in December 2025, earmarking $1.2 million for new public safety technologies in Queens.

Residents are encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activities and non-emergency concerns directly to the 106th Precinct or via 311 to aid ongoing enforcement efforts.

Information on Queens Public Safety Initiatives is readily available through various community resources.
